The duo, Mechak Elia of TP Mazembe and Ahmed Akaichi of Etoile du Sahel, has dominated the headlines ahead of the clash on Saturday, 20 February 2016 at the TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi.
His performance landed him much reviews with interests from clubs within Africa and beyond, but what most people did not know was that he had completed his move to Mazemze from sister club, Don Bosco just before the CHAN tournament.
Former Mazembe coach, Lamine N’diaye, now in charge of Don Bosco recommended the talented youngster to the technical handlers of ‘Les Corbeaux’ who have already starting reaping the fruits of the union. Last November, Elia scored twice as Mazembe beat a select Ghanaian side 3-1 in Accra to win the Mo Ibrahim Cup.
Assigned number 23, there is so much expectation on the player who has been touted as the ‘hottest commodity in Congolese football’ when he makes his much awaited debut against Etoile on Saturday.
On the otherhand, Akaichi exited the CHAN at the quarters, but his four goals from four matches endeared him to the hearts of the fans at the Stade Kigali in Nyamirambo. The 26-year old has shown consistency in front of goal and is a major source of worry to the backline of the opposing team.
Akaicki returned to his boyhood club last year, after stints in Germany with Ingolstadt 04 (2011-2012) and a two-year spell with local rivals, Esperance. His appearances at the 2010 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals at the latter puts him above Elia experience-wise.
Mazembe and Etoile have won the CAF Super Cup twice in the past and will be seeking for a third title.
