Egypt, Tunisia get second win at Men's U23 African Championship

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, November 8, 2014 – Hosts Egypt and favourites Tunisia continued their winning rhythm Saturday at the 2014 Men's U23 African Nations Championship, as both teams secured second victory over Libya and Rwanda.

Egypt defeated Libya 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19), while Tunisia crashed Rwanda 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) as both teams led the standings with two wins in two matches. Algeria rebounded after the opening defeat against Egypt to overcome Morocco 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17). Algeria improved to 1-1, matching Rwanda, while Morocco and Libya stayed winless in 2 matches.

Tunisia v Rwanda 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14)

Tunisia's opposite Adam Oueslati showed a great performance for the second match in a row to conduct his team to overpower Rwanda 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) in 76 minutes. The Tunisian team started the match at their peak and didn't allow the Rwandans to come back, except in some moments during the second set.



The victory improved Tunisia's win-loss ratio to 2-0, while Rwanda dropped to 1-1 in two matches.

Oueslati was the top scorer, ahead of any other player in both teams, scoring 20 points, followed by Elyes Garfi with 8 points. From the Rwandan side, both Aimable Mutuimana and Yves Mutabazi scored 10 points as the best in their side.

Tunisia started the match with a great concentration and succeeded to control the match action from the start as they used their experienced players to win the first set 25-18.

Rwanda led by their big Aimable Mutuyimana rebounded in the second set and stayed near in the score till Tunisia won the crucial points to end the set in a narrower range 25-21.

The third set showed early struggle from the Rwandans until they lead 8-7 at the first TTO, but Tunisia played their best to overcome this narrow gap and win the set widely 25-14.

Algeria v Morocco 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17)

Algeria fought for 94 minutes to overcome Morocco 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17) in the best of day two’s matches. Islam Chechali led the team with 21 points, while Morocco's Zouhair Graoui led the whole match scorers with 21 points. The Algerian teams narrowly dominated all the skills including blocking (8/7), serving (4/3) and spiking (52/42), but what made the real difference were the mistakes by Morocco.  

Algeria was more disciplined in the first set and controlled the match through their better spiking action specially Amar Harz and Amin Ameur. The team led throughout the set until they won 25-20.

Algeria played with more motivations in the second set, while the Moroccan team committed a lot of mistakes in reception and serving. Again the Algerians won the set more comfortably 25-18.

Morocco had dramatic change in their performance in the third set with the marvelous performance from Graoui until they won the set 25-23 to narrow the score to 2-1. Finally Algeria regained their concentration in reception and condensed attacks from the sides of the net to win the fourth set 25-17 and the match 3-1. 

Egypt v Libya 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19)

Hosts Egypt faced tough moments before they overpowered Libya 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) in 77 minutes. After Egypt won the first set comfortably 25-17, The Libyan team showed another face as they improved their combinations and used the service as a tool to disturb the Egyptians as they led several times in the second and third sets before the Egyptians fought aggressively to come back in each of the sets

With the victory Egypt improved their record to 2-0 (6pts), while Libya dropped to 0-2.

After the first set, the Libyan team improved all their skills specially the reception and blocks to lead frequently in the second and third sets.

With the spikes of Islam Mohamed and the tight block of Mohamed Adel, Egypt won the first set easily against a team with less discipline. Libya returned back to the court under leadership of opposite Mouhamed Lashlem to show organised volleyball, but they failed to win the critical points of the sets.
