International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has thanked international sports federations (IFs) for "giving proof" that the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games can be organised safely despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In a pre-recorded message played today at the opening of the virtual IF Forum, Bach said that since last year IFs had collectively organised "over 420 World Cups and World Championships with a participation of cumulatively over 51,000 athletes". He added: "In doing so you have demonstrated that sports competitions can be organised safely even under current restrictions. "Your collective experience gives all of us confidence in the Olympic Games 2020, because you gave proof that large international sports events can be organised successfully while safeguarding the health of everyone.
NEW YORK (Monday, May 24, 2021) – Columbus Crew midfielder Lucas Zelarayán has been voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for Week 6 of the 2021 MLS season.
Zelarayán scored two goals – both coming from direct free kicks – leading the Crew to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against New York City FC at Red Bull Arena on Saturday evening. ABUJA, Nigeria – May 26, 2021: The much talked about 2021 Ladies Golf and Tennis Development Clinic organised by the Ladies section of IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, held at the club, last Saturday.
Female and Male participants numbering over 95, registered for the one day Clinic which was aimed at introducing new players to the sports, improving the skills of those currently playing and encouraging them to progress further. More participants registered for golf (85) while the rest entered for tennis. At the end of the six-hour long session which included talks on Women and Sports, Etiquettes and Rules, and hands-on technical knowledge on sports handled by professionals, participants returned to their bases with new knowledge about Golf and Tennis.
The Nigeria Football Federation says it was immensely pained by news of the death of Head Coach of the Beach Soccer National Team (Supersand Eagles), Audu Adamu on Saturday. ‘Ejo’, who has led the Supersand Eagles to several FIFA World Cup and Beach Soccer AFCON campaigns, lost the battle against diabetes on Saturday evening.

Three-time African champions Nigeria will clash with CONCACAF Gold Cup holders Mexico in a friendly at the famous Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in the State of California, United States of America on Saturday, 3rd July.

Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 will be contested by 24 men’s and 16 women’s teams. A strong revised programme of men’s test matches is set to take place in July after all unions and World Rugby agreed a revised schedule within the existing window. The revisions have been made recognising an ongoing and complex global COVID-19 picture while aiming to limit further impact. The British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa headlines a busy July programme that will see 25 of the top 30 ranked unions in action with several hosting or being hosted for the first time since the pandemic began, including world champions South Africa and Rugby World Cup 2019 hosts Japan. With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to cause disruption, the underpinning principle for the schedule was the fixtures agreed in San Francisco in 2017. Where it was not possible or practical to honour that schedule, the hosting rights were reversed with key arrangements met. Where this contingency has not been possible for COVID-19 reasons, World Rugby has facilitated discussions to confirm an alternative schedule for teams consisting of a minimum of two matches for unions who sought replacement fixtures.

An elected board of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation led by Kelechi Mbagwu, was dissolved by the country’s sports minister, Sunday Dare, last week.
An action perceived as government interference into the affairs of a duly elected independent board. By the dissolution, the board was rendered invalid and substituted with a Caretaker Committee led by the first vice president of the Mbagwu led board, Iyorcha Grace. Other members of the board include Ntiense Williams and James Eakyns. The NRFF board was dissolved alongside 30 other federations and replaced with a caretaker committee. Hence, leading to a suspension from Rugby Afrique and a statement from World Rugby backing RA’s action, urging reinstatement and demanding explanations from the Nigerian sports ministry. |
