Christine Ashley elected first female vice-president of Ghana Chess Association

Christine Ashley has been elected as the first female vice president of the Ghana Chess Association (GCA) at an elective congress held at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium last Saturday.
She polled 29 votes out of 51 votes cast to beat her opponent, David Acheampong who polled 22 votes. 
Ashley before the elections was the Secretary General (SG) for the association and is also the current SG for the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA), Ghana Scrabble Association (GSA) and a member of the working committee for Ghana’s participation in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
At the end of counting, Philip Ameku who was then the Vice President was elected president with 39 votes while Ben Mills had 11 votes. One vote was rejected.

Cocoa from Ghana Headlines Ghana’s Participation Of 2018 Winter Olympic Games

Cocoa from Ghana has presented $25,000 to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to enable them to participate in the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
This was a response to the GOC’s plead for corporate support for Ghana’s participation in the Winter Games and the amount was agreed on after a successful meeting between the two parties at the GOC office in Accra last week.
Cocoa from Ghana’s representative, Mr. Henri Wientjes thanked the GOC for letting them be a part of the success story of Ghana’s skeleton athlete, Akwasi Frimpong.
He said they would be ready to offer any support to the GOC for the development of sports in the country.

The club will be owned by a local and global group of entrepreneurs:  global soccer and cultural icon and former MLS player David Beckham; Marcelo Claure, Sprint CEO, SoftBank board member and long-time Miami-resident and entrepreneur; Jorge and José Mas, the Miami-based leaders of telecommunications and construction giant MasTec; Masayoshi Son, founder and CEO of SoftBank; and entertainment entrepreneur and manager, Simon Fuller.

Ghana’s GRA wins first ever gold at Hockey African Club Championship

The Theodosia Okoh hockey stadium in Accra was filled with joy and wild celebrations as Ghana’s GRA ladies emerged winners in the women’s category beating Telkom to give Ghana her first ever gold in the competition.
The 20th edition of the Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) Women's category came to an end on Saturday January 28, 2018 with exciting and heartbreaking moments.

The duel was a repeat of the 2017 final. The sides had also met earlier in the round robin stage with Telkom beating GRA by a lone goal. The final started with a much packed stadium and GRA dictating pace from the blast. With revenge on their minds, the ladies from GRA mounted huge pressure on Telkom but the defense and goalkeeper stood tall.

​Substitute Gabriel Okechukwu scored a 108th minute winner for Nigeria who came from behind to beat a resilient Angola side 2-1 on Sunday in Tangiers to book a place at the semis.

Angola took an early second half lead through Vladimir Va after Emeka Atuloma's clearance bounced off him and went past goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa in the Nigeria goal on 55 minutes.

The official distance of the 2018 Comrades Marathon as well as changes to the route have been confirmed by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “The officially measured and certified distance for this year’s Down Run is 90,184km.”

The 2018 Comrades Down Run will be slightly longer than the previous Down Run route. The 2016 route was 89,208km.”

World champions Australia have dropped two places to fifth, while ICC Champions Trophy winners Pakistan have conceded three points in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings following an action-packed month of white ball cricket, which saw 17 ODIs being played between seven sides in Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand.

While the 50-over tournament champions have slipped in the team rankings table, England and New Zealand have been rewarded for their impressive performances against Australia and Pakistan, respectively.
