Bafana Bafana arrive in Cape Town to start CHAN preparations

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has praised clubs that assisted the national team with players for the upcoming CAF African Nations Championship.

The South Africans arrived in Cape Town on Friday night (3 January 2014) to start their preparations for the tournament.

“It has been trying times over the last few weeks but I want to thank the teams for making this happen because it has been tough for all of us. Several meetings have been held and we now have the players we need for the tournament,” said Igesund.

With just eight days to go before the opening ceremony of the 2014 Chan tournament, the local organizing committee has released a statement professing that they are geared up to host the tournament.

The Chan CEO, Mvuzo Mbebe, said that the excitement is building up and he also testified that only three cities will play host to the tournament.
The Democratic Republic of Congo were the first team to arrive for the tournament and they will be based in Polokwane where they will be battling against Gabon, Burundi and Mauritania in Group D.

In addition to Polokwane, the other cities that will play host to the tournament are Cape Town and Bloemfontein.

CHAN 2014: Ghana Drops Star Player

The Black Stars of Ghana have dropped utility midfielder and Hearts of Oak captain, Moro Abubakar, from a Kotoko dominated Ghana final 23 man squad for this month’s Chan tournament to be played in South Africa.

The technical team named the final squad that is dominated by players from Ghana title holders and league leaders Asante Kotoko who provide eight players. They include the central defensive pair of Kwabena Adusei and Abeiku Ainooson.

FA cup winners Medeama have three of their players roped in including their experienced goal minder Foli Adade who is set to man the Black Stars goal.

CHAN 2014: Nigeria To Clash with Ethiopia in Friendly

Tournament favorites, Nigeria are set to clash with Ethiopia in a preparatory match ahead of the Chan 2014 tournament in what promises to be a cracking appetizer. The two sides will trade boot to boot tomorrow at the National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.

Both teams will use the friendly match to fine tune their squads ahead of the tournament that will take place in the course of three weeks starting January 11 in South Africa. It is a tournament that is sorely reserved for professionals who ply their trade in the domestic leagues of their countries.

Debbie Hockley and Bob Simpson were today inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame* in a special function that was held in Sydney.

The duo received their commemorative cap from ICC President Alan Isaac in an event that was also attended by Cricket Australia President and ICC Director Mr Wally Edwards, and a number of living ICC Hall of Famers.

Hockley is the fourth female and Simpson the 72nd male cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame*.

The tournament match referees will be Jeff Crowe, Roshan Mahanama and Dev Govindjee

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the umpire and match referee appointments for the warm-up and first round matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014, which will be staged in New Zealand from 13 January to 1 February.

In all during the tournament, there will be 14 umpires who will officiate, including Marais Erasmus of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires while the remaining 13 representatives will be from the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires and the ICC Associates and Affiliates Umpires’ Panel.
