4 May 2016 – It is less than 100 days to the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which are scheduled to start from 3 – 20 August.

With the clock ticking, so are the key dates for submitting crucial documents.

Friday, 29 April was the deadline for handing in the long list of players intended to be used for the tournament for both male and female teams to SASCOC.

The next important date on the calendar for those who have qualified for the Olympics is Wednesday, 1 June when teams are expected to provide the provisional list of players – 35 in total both to SASCOC and FIFA.

The Football Associations will then have just over a month to trim down their squads to the required 22 players – (18 + 4 standby), as the final list of players which will have to be handed in on Thursday, 14 July – again both to SASCOC and FIFA.

“Until the 14th of July this year, we won’t know the identity of the players going to the Olympics. We would like to appeal to everyone to be patient as we will make a big announcement once the final squads have been finalised,” said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.

According to competition rules:

Players will be allowed to be replaced from 18 July 2016 until 24 hours prior to kickoff – the replacement of an injured athlete can be done with any player from the FIFA Provisional List of 35 players or with one of the four additional players)

After the start of competition, the replacement of injured athlete will only be possible with one of the four Alternate Athletes

Under no circumstances should the list of 18 players in the men’s competition include more than the maximum number of three overage players
