Teams from the Zimbabwe Tug of War Federation (ZITWF) southern region have started preparations for their tournament scheduled for the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in April.
ZITWF southern region liaison officer Samkeliso Dladla said most clubs had started preparations for the new season, which is marked by the annual ZITF exhibition.
“We’re happy that almost every team has started training. We’re still waiting to hear confirmation from two clubs on whether they will take part in this year’s league, but we’re expecting stiff competition at the ZITF event,” said Dladla.

She said they were trying to promote the sport in Bulawayo and invited interested clubs to join the league.
ZITWF has three women and seven men’s teams in the southern region.
“We’re trying to promote the sport in our city and are inviting more clubs to increase competition. We’re working on our calendar of events and will release it as soon as we get confirmation from clubs.
“Tug of war teaches communication and respect for each other, just like any other sport, and in Bulawayo we want to have more women participating in it. There is no one who is strong in this sport; everyone is equally strong. It is a non-contact competitive sport suitable for a wide range of abilities. It’s fully inclusive, it’s suitable for individuals who would like to participate but lack the coordination and technical skills required in other sports,” said Dladla.
