Midfielder Merveille Bope’s second half strike proved crucial for the DR Congo giants who advanced on the away goal rule after a 2-2 tie after a lone goal victory from the first leg.
The host cancelled the first leg deficit on 28 minutes after Mazembe goalie Sylvain Gbohouo was adjudged to have fouled Youssef Fouzai in the vital area for a penalty, which the latter converted with ease.
‘Les Corbeaux’ resumed stronger and succeeded in levelling the scores on 69 minutes through Bope, who tucked home from close range after Bolingi has headed his path.
Five minutes on, Ahmed Hosni restored the homers lead from a solo move, rounding two Mazembe defenders before firing past a hapless Gbohouo.
The Congolese will have to play the remaining quarter of an hour with ten men after Bolingi was shown a straight red card. However, they held on and defended gallantly to ensure the third goal that Gabesien needed never saw the light of day.
It is the third time Mazembe have reached the group stage of the second-tier continental club championship after 2007 and 2013.
