Lausanne, Switzerland, February 5, 2016 – With the first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event this year set to take place in Kish Island, Iran from February 15-19, beach volleyball technical supervisors and referee delegates have gathered at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne to align plans and make sure the sport continues to attract a wider audience in a key Olympic year.
"Please keep in mind how we can improve the presentation of our sport both on the court and on screen. The reduction of match duration to less than one hour will play a key part in this and is our major goal in this seminar to discuss how to achieve this through changes such as putting an increased emphasis on running only replays with top actions whilst reducing the number of the regular replays which seem to occur after every rally.
"The celebration of "goals" in volleyball is a major focal point. We will be providing more rally clips to promote the athletes and the outstanding skill which they are displaying on a regular basis. Great content will help us celebrate the success of our sport."
On day one of the seminar on Thursday, the participants were updated on the different technological innovations which will enhance beach volleyball as a spectacle, including the Video Challenge System, LED nets (not yet used for beach volleyball) and speed guns, all of which are set to be used or tested at different events in 2016 and 2017 in conjunction with electronic scoreboards and giant video walls.
The agenda for the first day of the seminar also included a report on the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Rio Open, which served as the Olympic Games Test Event for beach volleyball. The event stakeholders provided positive feedback on a successful event, which was also an opportunity to test the venue setup, the coordination of staff and technology.

On day two of the seminar, the technical supervisors and referee delegates are due to be split into two groups to study areas specific to each role. The technical supervisors will review changes to the competition regulations. They will also spend time on the new event structure for beach volleyball for 2017 and beyond, the FIVB's Collaborate platform and the Volleyball Information System (VIS). The referee delegates will focus on Collaborate, the VIS and changes to the Rules of the Game and Refereeing Regulations.
A seminar specifically for referees will be held in Saquarema, Brazil in the immediate run-up to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Rio Grand Slam which will take place from March 8-13.
