Lausanne, Switzerland, May 13, 2015 - The International Volleyball Federation is pleased to announce that a double-gender FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Open event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from September 1-6.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Rio Open, which will serve as the test event for the beach volleyball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, will be the fifth Open event on the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar, after stops in Fuzhou, Lucerne, Prague, and Istanbul. The new event will be a fantastic opportunity for the world’s top teams to compete in the Brazilian city and test functional areas ahead of the Rio Olympics.
The Rio Open event will be played with the Olympic format with 24 teams per gender. A qualification tournament will also be implemented with 32 teams per gender.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 2015 also launches the Olympic qualification process with all FIVB World Tour events (except the World Tour Finals) in 2015 up until June 13, 2016 counting towards the Olympic Ranking in order to determine the 15 vacancies for each gender which will take part in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The Rio Open will take place at exactly the same location as the beach volleyball tournament at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Copacabana Beach, which is set to provide another iconic venue for an Olympic beach volleyball tournament.
