BALTIMORE (Thursday, January 14, 2016) – When Jack Harrison was chosen with the first overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas, he made history as the first player ever chosen from Wake Forest University with the No. 1 overall pick. Then minutes later, the Generation adidas midfielder made history of a different sort.
It was the third time in MLS SuperDraft the No. 1 overall selection was traded on the day of the draft. In 2006, Chivas USA received No. 5 overall selection from the MetroStars in return for the No. 1 pick, which was then used to select Marvell Wynne. In 2014, D.C. United traded the No. 1 overall selection to Philadelphia Union for the No. 2 selection, and Union then selected Andre Blake with the first pick overall.
The Chicago Fire, who made a second trade involving first-round draft picks, weren’t the only team busy in the SuperDraft. Philadelphia Union – who already held the No. 3 overall selection – then also obtained the No. 2 selection from the Colorado Rapids. Union used the picks to obtain a pair of Georgetown Univ. defenders: Joshua Yaro with the second selection overall, and Keegan Rosenberry with the third pick. Union also held the sixth pick in the first round, which they used to take Creighton Univ. midfielder Fabian Herbers.
Harrison, Yaro and Herbers were all among the Generation adidas class – all seven members of which were selected in the first 11 picks overall.
Georgetown Univ. and the Univ. of North Carolina each had three players selected in the first round. In addition to Yaro and Rosenberry, Georgetown saw defender Cole Seiler taken with the 16th pick by Vancouver Whitecaps FC. North Carolina had midfielder Omar Holness (No. 5, Real Salt Lake) and defenders Jordan McCrary (No. 10, New England Revolution) and Jonathan Campbell (No. 12, Chicago Fire). It was the seventh and eighth times in SuperDraft history one school had three or more players selected in the first round.
Players from 29 colleges and universities were represented in the 41 selections overall. There were also players selected from 10 different countries: USA, Canada, Jamaica, England, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Belize.
