Wits manager, Jose Ferreira confirmed the development with Kick Off magazine that the Malawi international striker will not be used by his team for the time being.
“Mhango’s contract is only effective on July 1.We can’t bring him this season because we have exhausted our foreign quota. Definitely when we open the new season, we will have space for him in the team,” Ferreira explained.
Mhango incurred the wrath of Celtic management after he decided not to renew his contract with the club and instead opted to sign a three-year pre contract with Bidvet Wits University.
The Chairperson for Phunya Sele Sele, Max Tshabalala said his club decided to release the player because he would not be hundred per cent committed to the club’s cause.
“Let him go with immediate effect because he will no longer be 100 per cent committed to the team,” said Tshabalala.
Meanwhile, the diminutive Malawi striker has defended his decision to put pen to paper with Wits University arguing that his former club was dragging its feet to renew his deal.
“Celtic kept me waiting [for a new contract].After meeting with Wits on Sunday I decided to sign with them, ”Mhango said.
This latest development is likely to affect Mhango participation in international assignments for his national team the Flames on the grounds that he will not be having enough game time to be considered for team selection.
