Kenya celebrate their victory against Tunisia on Day 2 of the African Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament

Yaoundé, Cameroon, February 13, 2016 – Kenya, Cameroon, Algeria and Egypt secured the final four spots on Day 2 of the African Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament at Palais des Sports on Saturday.

Kenya handed Tunisia its second-straight loss in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-23) encounter in Pool A to secure a spot in the semifinal. Kenya dominated the first two sets to win with a wide margin before Tunisia came back in the third set to overcome a 10-point deficit to draw at 22-all. However, Kenya utilised its experience to end the set and match 25-23.

Kenya were led by Suzuki Moim with nine points, while Kaothar Gemail recorded seven points on a losing effort.

In Pool B, Algeria and Egypt punched in their second victories over Botswana and Uganda, respectively. Algeria nailed a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) win over Uganda, while Egypt hammered Botswana 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-17).

In the first match, the Algerian coach rested his main players and allowed his substitutes to get some court action in the first set. The move kind of ricocheted as Uganda fought for every point in the first set that led to a deadlock at 22-all. Fortunately, Algeria still ended up on top, as they scored the next three points to clinch the first set. Algeria showed complete dominance in the next two sets as their main players came back to finish the job.

Algerian outside spiker Kahina Arbouche led all scorers with 13 points, followed by Safia Boukhima’s 10 markers. Saidat Nnungi led Uganda with nine points.

Meanwhile, Botswana showed their best form as they led in several occasions in the first set, but Egypt had some key substitutions that allowed them to regain the lead and the eventual set-victory. Egypt showed utmost authority on defence that regulated the opposing side in the next two sets.

Egypt’s Mariam Metwally scored 12 points, while Botswana’s Gasenkgnwe tallied seven. The Egyptian team dominated Botswana at the net with 11-1 blocks and served 6-1 aces.

The third day of the preliminary round will determine the ranking in each pool, when Kenya challenge hosts Egypt for the top spot in Pool A, and Egypt play Algeria in a North African clash for the top spot in Pool B.
