After the exits of Wales, Ireland and Scotland in the Quarter Finals of the Rugby World Cup at the weekend, it became clear there would be no ‘Home Advantage’ for the home nations’ teams this year.

According to data published in Sportcal’s Global Sports Impact Report 2015, athletes are more likely to win at events staged in their home nation.  This supports the widely held hypothesis that athletes perform better on home soil in front of fervent crowds and thus nations, on average, win more medals when hosting events.

The report studied 73 world championships and multi-sport games in 2014 and the data showed that nations won on average 1.95 more medals when hosting events than when compared with previous editions

In total, 142 more medals were won by host nations across the 73 events, including 66 gold medals.

This home nation ‘bounce’ was most notable in the major multi-sport games of 2014. On average, the hosts increased their share of the total medals won by 5.65%.

Russia won 42 more medals on home-soil in the 2014 Winter Paralympics compared with 2010 – increasing their share of medals from 19.79% to 37.04%.  In the Winter Olympics, an increase of 18 medals over 2010 meant Russia’s share increased from 5.81% to 11.19%.

Of the 73 events analysed, 32 showed a positive increase in the number of hosts winning more medals, 11 showed a decline, with the remainder showing no change.

UK Sport, one of the world’s leading high performance agencies, recognises the potential of ‘Home Advantage’. It has invested significantly in securing events for the UK to form the ‘Every Road to Rio’ programme, offering home athletes their very best opportunities to qualify for the Rio 2016 Games and to win medals.
