Bafana Bafana stepped into the den of the Indomitable Lions in search of their first victory in the qualifiers to keep their AFCON 2017 hopes alive against a side that is sitting at the summit of the group.
Rantie’s opener was cancelled out by Indomitable Lions forward Sebastian Siani at the stroke of half time as both teams went to the break deadlocked at 1-1.
Soon after the break, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana continued with his knack of scoring spectacular goals. The burly midfielder spotted Assembe off his line and pulled the trigger from his own half to leave the keeper stunned and give the visitors the lead once again on 50 minutes.
South Africa’s fluid interchange of passes caused problems for the home side but they failed to use it to their advantage. A lapse of concentration in the 66th minute gave away Bafana’s precious lead when central defender Nicholas Koulou headed home from a Henri Bedimo set piece to level matters.
The game opened up towards the dying minutes as both teams went in search for the winning goal however it was the home side that almost grabbed the winner in the very last minute of stoppage time as Bafana Bafana defender, Thulani Hlatshwayo volleyed what was almost the winning goal off the line to secure a point for the visitors.
The result leaves Cameroon at the top of the group with seven points while South Africa move a position up Gambia with just two points from three matches.
Cameroon will travel to South Africa for the return leg on Tuesday, 29 March 2016 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
