Ghana defeated Mozambique 3-1 in a crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday at the Accra Sports Stadium to tighten their grip in Group H.

The Black Stars playing in front of the critical supporters in the capital for the first time this year scored once and twice in the first and second halves respectively to ensure they stayed at the apex of the table with the maximum nine points.

It was Frank Acheampong, arguably the homers best player of the day who opened the Black Stars’ account early in the first half with a well-taken finish after he was played through by returnee Majid Waris.

Without skipper Asamoah Gyan who is sidelined with injury, the Ghanaians played calmly despite their glaring lack of communication to ensure they went into recess with their tails up.

Ghana had failed to entertain but stayed on course with Acheampong's goal. After the interval, the Black Stars increased their intensity and their effort soon paid off when John Boye profited from a goal mouth scramble to head home the second to consolidate their lead just before the hour mark.

Ghana invaded in one of their early incursions and caught the Mamba defence in bits with the visitors waving for a hand ball. Before the goal, a defender headed away a goal bound shot by Christian Atsu but the ball appeared to have come off Boye and entered the yawning net for the Black Stars' second goal.

Few minutes later, Jordan Ayew ensured his name was on the scorers list by increasing the tally to three with a beautiful flick that left the visitors’ goalkeeper Suarez Soares completely beaten.

The visitors rallied after Ayew's goal and pulled one back through Apson Manjante from a close range header with goalkeeper Razak Braimah compromised.
