Banjul, Gambia, October 4, 2015 – The Gambia national federation (GVBF) started another stage of the African Dream Project as their president Yunusa Barry toured four centres in Gambian provinces.

The introduction of the African Dream Project in December 2014 by the national federation signified the move for decentralisation of volleyball in the grassroots level. The project has set up four centres nationwide in Banjul, Serrekunda, Brikama and Farafenni in the North Bank region of Gambia. Barry and the project management team visited Farafenni on Saturday to assess the readiness of the centre.

In his welcome speech, the Director of Africa Dream Project in Gambia, Mr Bai Dodou Jallow encouraged the community and schools to get involved in the project to avoid crimes and drug abuse.

“This project was made to discover and nurture hidden talents in the grassroots level,” Jallow said. “The African Dream Project is here for the Gambians, and we have a collective responsibility to support the GVBF in realising our dreams. Farafenni is the only region in Gambia that have benefitted from the project, but they have to tighten their belts to show commitment or the centre will be moved to another region.”

Farafenni Senior Secondary School PE teacher Yusuf appealed to the national federation to put more consideration to the centres because there are a lot of talents to discover in the region.

For his part, GVBF president Barry reiterated his executive’s willingness and commitment to spread the game to the last village in Gambia.

He advises the children to maintain discipline and to follow their coaches and trainers. Sport and physical education is fundamental to the early development of the youth; and the skills learned during play, in physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young players.

Barry also emphasised that the Africa Dream Project is the initiative of FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F°, who intends to see an African nation in the podium of the FIVB Volleyball World Championships. Barry told the children that volleyball is one of the easiest sports to get involved in and it is not at all an expensive sport to play. If you are simply looking for a recreational sport, volleyball is the best discipline to gather a group of friends to start playing the game.
