KATUTURA – Recently inaugurated with the support of the International Basketball Foundation (IBF), the new FIBA 3x3 court at the Basketball Artists School (BAS) in Namibia is already proving to be a huge hit.

Set up six years ago, the Basketball Artists School is a collaborative effort between the German non-profit organization ISIBINDI and the Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF), which has since received further support from the International Basketball Foundation, German Basketball Federation, the German Olympic Sports Confederation as well as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) within the project ‘Free Throw – Basketball Artists against HIV and Aids.’

Some 50 children aged between 11 and 18 years old who attend the BAS have been reaping the rewards of the partnership and loving the chance to express themselves on the new 3x3 court.
We are excited to be partnering with the project in Namibia and to be working with the school and using the 3x3 discipline as a catalyst for change – something which exactly matches our strategy," enthused IBF President, Yvan Manini.

The educational aspect of the project gives additional value to the programme and we whole heartedly support it.”
Meanwhile Frank Albin, the Founder and Director of the BAS confirmed the installation of the court was having a hugely positive impact on the young people using the new facility.

He said,
It's much easier for our kids now to play basketball as they can just use the new court which is directly behind our building.

We can also allow more basketball groups at the same time, as now we have much more space to use.

Through this new court, we can offer a Saturday programme where the court is crowded with kids and we can even use the court for doing other sports which our kids love as well.

We use the new 3x3 court every day and the only challenge at the moment is that the rainy season is coming back.

There's not a lot of rain here, but we never know when it's coming and thankfully it should be over soon and then we’ll have around half a year without any rain at all.” - Frank Albin, Founder and Director of the BAS
However during that dry spell, you can expect the rain drops to be replaced with basketballs falling out of the Namibian sky, as the delighted youngsters at the BAS continue to make the most of their newly installed 3x3 court.
IBF supports humanitarian, educational and social projects in deprived areas around the world. All projects use basketball as a motor for change.
