And for the third time, Algerian opponents have served the nemesis for Ghanaian clubs, being responsible for the exit, and further cementing that age-long record of no Ghanaian club ousting an opponent from the North African country in the history of the prestigious club competition.
Three years ago, it was MO Bejaia’s city rivals, JSM Bejaia which eliminated two-time winners, Asante Kotoko. In 2015, it was yet another Algerian side, MC Eulma who cut short the latter’s continental dreams at the 1/16th round.
It was merry-making for Malagasy champions, CNapS going past the preliminary round of a continental championship for the first time in their history, thanks to a lone goal victory over Kenya’s Gor Mahia. Njiva Rakotoarimalala scored the only goal on 28 minutes as the Islanders completed a double over their guests and 3-1 on aggregate.
Former winners, Nigeria’s Enyimba and ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire also booked their places at the next round. A brace from Mfon Udoh was enough for two-time winners Enyimba to beat Vipers of Uganda and advance 2-1 on aggregate, whilst ASEC were held by Cotontchad of Chad 0-0 in Abidjan but still managed to go through on the back on a lone goal win from the reverse in N’djamena a fortnight ago.
Tunisian giants, Club Africain made their rich experience at this stage count by holding Ivorian champions, Tanda to a barren draw and progressing 2-0 on aggregate.
The biggest winners were Horoya of Guinea thumping AS Douanes of Senegal 4-0 in Conakry. All four goals came in the second half with Alseny Bangoura, Daouda Camara, Jean Francis Dipita and Ghana-import Mandela Ocansey each finding target.
Rwanda champions, APR bounced back from a 1-0 first leg loss to Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland with a 4-1 win in Kigali with central defender Abdul Rwatubyaye grabbing a hat-trick and the other from Patrick Sibomana, whilst Sanele Mkhweli netted a consolation for the visitors.
John Chingandu scored a late winner for Zambia’s Zesco United against Al Ghazala of South Sudan in Juba whilst Doumande Siekoua’s first half strike was enough for Stade Malien to complete a double over Racing Club de Bobo of Burkina Faso.
