
Cairo, Egypt, March 23, 2016 – Algerian newcomers Fanar Ain Azel surprised Cameroon's experienced champions FAP in a gruelling 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 15-12) victory in Pool D of the Men's African Club Championship at Cairo Stadium Complex in Egypt on Wednesday.
The opening ceremony was followed by wins for defending champions and 11-time winners Ahly of Egypt, five-time champions Zamalek, the emerging Geish and newcomers Smouha. The favourites all won, with Libya's Swehly, RD Congo's Espoir and Algeria's Setif all taking straight-sets victories.

Swehly (LBA) v Police (SEN) 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-14)
Zamalek (EGY) v Daim Hamad (SUD) 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-19)
Libya's Swehly needed 67 minutes to overcome Police 25-19, 25-17, 25-14 after a great game. The Libyan team were better at the net with powerful attacks. Zamalek were well supported by their fans and won 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-19), while Gendarmerie overpowered DGSP in 69 minutes.

Douanes (BUR) v Atletico (CPV) 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18)
Ahly (EGY) v TGOM (GAB) 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15)
Espoir (RD Congo) started the pool matches with a comfortable win against Wolaitta in 74 minutes. Ahly started their campaign by beating TGOM 3-0 in 62 mintes to show that they are eyeing a 12th title. Douanes fought for 76 minutes to down TGOM 3-0.

Geish (EGY) v GSU (KEN) 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-21)
Esperance (TUN) v Stef Auto (MAD) – walkover
Setif (ALG) showed the development of Algerian volleyball as they cruised past Cameroon Sport 3-0. Egyptian League leaders Geish trounced GSU 3-0 as the Kenyans didn't show enough resistance. Stef Auto didn't show for their match against Esperance of Tunisia, who were awarded a 3-0 win.

Nemostars showed the improving Ugandan volleyball and they beat El Nahda 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-16). Algeria’s Fanar played their best to overcome the strong Cameroonian service on the way to a thrilling victory over FAP 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 15-12). Smouha flew past Ahly Beni Ghazi 3-0.
