Afriforum says it will complain to international sports bodies about Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s ban on SA Rugby‚ Cricket SA‚ Netball SA and Athletics SA hosting international events.
On Monday, Mbalula announced that he has decided to impose punitive measures on four of the big five federations who have not met their transformation targets.
He says Mbalula is shifting the blame to federations when government should be developing children at school level.
The civil rights organisation said international sport regulations expressly forbid any form of political interference in sport.
AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said the organisation will instruct its legal team to investigate what steps are necessary to submit complaints to the international bodies.
“I am delighted that SAFA has met its transformation targets. I therefore resolved to revoke the privilege of ASA, CSA, Netball SA and SARU to host or to bid for any major events in the RSA as a consequence of not meeting their transformation targets with immediate effect. I will review the decision when considering the 2016/2017 transformation barometer,” Mbalula said.
