
The country’s online media quoted the legendary commentator son Ponga Liwewe in their Tuesday edition confirming the death.
Liwewe, 78 died this morning at Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital in Lusaka.
“He passed away this morning in hospital,” Lusaka Times quoted Ponga as saying.
According to Ponga his father had been hospitalised at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital after suffering a Liver ailment.
He disclosed that further details about funeral arrangements for the legendary commentator will be released later after the family meeting on Tuesday afternoon in Lusaka.
“He died at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital about hour ago.I am in Kitwe right now but we‘ll give you more details when I get to Lusaka,” he earlier told The Post Online.
In his 45 years of soccer commentary, the late Liwewe covered over 14 Africa Cup finals.
The late Liwewe will also be remembered for giving one of the most moving eulogies ever seen on Zambia television at occasion when Zambia lost its entire national soccer team in Gabon Air Crash in 1993.
