There was no immediate explanation for the rise from the local organising committee or the government. The figures were disclosed in a government decree signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
In May, the Russian government provided an extra R4.7bn in funds to aid preparations for the World Cup. At the time, a government resolution posted on its legal information web portal said that the expenditure for event preparation had been raised from R638.84bn to R643.55bn.
The 2018 World Cup will be staged from 14th June to 15th July 15. Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Volgograd, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi and Yekaterinburg are the host cities.
