Vienna, Austria, July 29, 2017 – The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Vienna provided the perfect backdrop on Saturday for athletes and the Presidents of the FIVB and IOC to meet informally and share their views on the sport.

FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° and IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach were in Vienna on the second day of World Championship action, which saw Australians McHugh and Schumann upset 14th-seeded Oleg Stoyanovskiy/Artem Yarzutkin of Russia in a pool play match.

The two Presidents had a whirlwind day in Vienna touring the Beach Arena, as well as the Beach Village and side courts, trying their hand at beach volleyball on the #VolleyballYourWay courts before producing the “ceremonial first serve” in front of 10,000 fans. “The expectations for myself were almost as high as before an opening speech of the Olympic Games,” joked Bach.

Beach volleyball on the iconic Copacabana beach quickly became one of the signature events of Rio 2016. The sport received global acclamation for creating the ultimate party atmosphere at the Olympic Games last year and the World Championships in Vienna show no signs of any slowing down in the sport's popularity.

Having the set the standard for fan engagement at an Olympic Games, Vienna has carried on the tradition of its “monster block” segments, which have become fan favourites uniting everyone together at the venues.
