MIES (Rio 2016 Paralympics) - The reigning world and Paralympic champions are to square off in the Group Phase of both the men's and women's wheelchair basketball competitions at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Group A: Canada; Germany; Great Britain; Argentina; Brazil
Group B: USA; Netherlands; France; China; Algeria
In the men's tournament, World champions Australia will face defending Paralympic Gold medalists Canada in a tough Group A that also includes Spain, Turkey, the Netherlands and Japan. Hosts Brazil will play in Group B against Parapan American Games Champions and London 2012 bronze medalists USA as well as Iran, European Champions Great Britain, Germany and Algeria.
In the women's tournament, world champions Canada will face defending Paralympic Gold medalists Germany in Group A, as well as Brazil, Great Britain and Argentina. In Group B will be the top three teams of their respective zones: European Champions Netherlands, Parapan American Games winners USA and Asia Oceania Champions China. France and Algeria are also in Group B.
IWBF President, Ulf Mehrens, said after the draw: "All the groups both in the men’s and women’s competition will be really interesting."
The standard of wheelchair basketball across the world is progressing all the time and the Paralympic Games will see the best countries from their representative zones come together to compete for the Paralympic title. - Mehrens
The events will take place from 7-18 September at the Olympic Training Center and the Rio Olympic Arena.
