Ghana’s Abdul Wahid Omar make history when he faces Argentina’s Alberto Ezequiel Melian in the first round of the men’s bantamweight 56 kg of the boxing event. The bout will take place on August 11 at the Riocentro. Wahid got a place in the Games via a scholarship from the International Olympic Committee and victory for the Omar will send him to the Round of 16. Meanwhile, judoka Szandra Dzogedi will face Rafaela Silva in the women’s 63kg on Tuesday 11th August in the Carioca Arena 2.
Ghana has won only two bronze medals in Olympic history. Coach Ofori Asare, one of the leading boxing instructors in Africa, whose gym Wahid trains believes his ward will live up to expectation and do well in Brazil. He noted that sportsmen in Ghana should be taken good care of, because they are stars and ambassadors, and we should stop the last minute preparations, which does not motivate the sportsmen.
