In a bid to retain the title, Vipers beat Express in a very tensed game played in Buikwe, situated in the Central Region of Uganda, thanks to late strike from attacking midfielder Saddam Juma.
With the fans turning up in large numbers, Vipers dominated the bigger percentage of the game with many open chances created for William Wadri, Erisa Sekisambu and Pius Wangi going unanswered.
The ‘Red Eagles’ were solid in defense especially goalie Ali Kiggundu who was firm and stopped all balls that Vipers put his way. Wangi and Wadri got two headers in succession go wide, whilst the latter saw his effort later punched out.
Visitors Express, a six-time league champion had moments of brilliance with Tony Odur attempting to volley which Vipers custodian Isam Watenga dealt with the situation.
Both sides upped their game in the second half but it was Juma, who settled matters with a volley on 88 minutes that the Express goalie failed to handle and give Vipers a sweet home victory.
“We played with a lot of urgency and character and we knew having missed many chances that we had to be sharper and on target. Later, the chance came for us and it paid off,” said match decider, Juma.
