Kenya’s Captain, Victor Wanyama said his Kenyan side were the “better team” in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sierra Leone in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.
Sierra Leone enjoyed a victory at home, ending the Harambee Stars 10 games unbeaten run which mostly came from friendly matches.
He said: “I must compliment my side. We were the better team; we had the better chances in the game. Sierra Leone took their chances and they won the match.”
“We’ve put in a good performance despite conceding the goals which was unfortunate for us. Of course we did have our chances and, regretfully, we didn't score. But we just didn't have the luck we needed today but from the plays on the field I think we were better than the Sierra Leone side.”
Wanyama was also disappointed with the officiating but admitted that they do respect the referee’s decision.
“I am disappointed with the officiating that was why I was around the referee, but we respected his decision and it is all done, we have nothing to do now because it has passed. We showed true character and I insist we are the better side.”
