In a matter of two seasons, Toronto FC has rapidly ascended to dominance as both a power in MLS and an unstoppable force in the Canadian soccer landscape. Sitting one trophy shy of the first-ever MLS treble, TFC has expertly crafted a postseason path, which could lead to MLS Cup glory and three trophies won – all at home – in a single season. On June 27, Toronto defeated the Montreal Impact 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate) to clinch the 2017 Canadian Championship and bragging rights as Canada’s premier professional club. The rolling accomplishments continued last weekend with a 4-2 defeat of the New York Red Bulls to secure the 2017 MLS Supporters’ Shield, as TFC earned the top seed in the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs – a first for any Canadian-based MLS club to date. Toronto’s current 19-5-8 record is also reminiscent of a 2016 FC Dallas’ side (17-8-9) that last season captured the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Supporters’ Shield, but fell short of MLS Cup and the trophy trio.
Will Toronto FC be the first to claim the three coveted pieces of hardware during a dream season that continues to be history in the making?
