Mary Onyali an African and Nigerian woman sprint legend was passionate as an athlete and her passion to compete and succeed is still alive and burning deep inside her as she translates it into other ventures especially for the benefit of lifting sports in her homeland of Nigeria to its fullest capacity.
Mary is one of a crop of stellar athletes that brought Nigerian athletics to prominence in the 1980’s and 90’s when Nigerian athletics was in its heydays. Names like Chidi Imoh, Innocent Egbunike, Falilat Ogunkoya and Chioma Ajunwa to name but a few were not only synonymous with Nigerian athletics but with global athletics excellence as they battled against the Americans, British and Jamaicans for dominance on the track in those years. Those years are now long gone and today save for the likes of Blessing Okagbare, Nigerian Athletics is but a ghost of those golden years and it is the drive to revive those glory days and bring back respect to Nigeria that has spurred Mary and some of her compatriots of those yesteryears in collaboration with some very influential people in the national sports landscape of Nigeria like Former Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi that has the former star working hard around the clock to promote a Nigerian Olympic Fund.
Combining forces with some influential figures the Sports Development Fund has been launched and several strategies are now in place to allow Nigerians to not only contribute but be a part of the process of contributing in various ways to the success of the effort.
