Morris started the match on the bench but came on at halftime to score two goals in Seattle’s 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire FC at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, ensuring the defending MLS Cup winner’s championship celebration was not spoiled. The 25-year-old academy product recorded his second career MLS brace on opening day, one of four players in League history to accomplish the feat twice, and first to do so in back-to-back years. Morris is currently tied for the league lead with two goals scored, while Seattle sits tied atop the Western Conference standings with three points.
The U.S. Men’s National Team star gave Sounders FC a 2-1 advantage in the third minute of second half stoppage time to complete the comeback and cement a victory. Cristian Roldan headed the ball towards the far post off a corner kick, and Morris redirected the ball into goal with a header of his own for his second goal of the match (watch goal).
Seattle returns to action on Saturday, March 7 when hosting Columbus Crew SC (10 p.m. ET, ESPN+).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting.
