SABC will broadcast the SA Senior Athletics Track And Field Championships live around lunchtime on day two of the flagship event that is currently underway in Stellenbosch, Western Cape.
The public broadcaster told City Press this week that it agreed to a deal with Athletics SA (ASA) but could not elaborate further on the finer details on the broadcasting rights contract.
“The SABC/ASA signed the contract in March 2015,” said SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago in an emailed response.
During the lunch hour, the viewers will watch five exhilarating finals in the track events – the women’s high jump final (12pm), the men’s (12.10pm) and women’s (12.20pm) 400m hurdles finals, as well as the men’s and the women’s 100 finals at 12.30pm and 12.40pm respectively.
ASA president Aleck Skhosana said he was excited that athletics was back on television after last year’s national championships did not receive full coverage on TV as the contract was not finalised at the time.
Skhosana also refused to divulge the value of the deal, citing a confidentiality clause in the contract.
