Most local football lovers will have been sitting in eager anticipation over the past month or two for the 2016/17 campaign to begin.
Tonight, the Premier Soccer League will grace our screens once again as our favourite clubs and players take to the field and battle it out for the title. Personally, I cannot wait to hear the opening whistle blow, and I am sure you, the fans, are chewing your nails as I sit behind this laptop at my desk wondering what the new campaign has up its sleeves.
However, Soweto giants and the Brazilians’ big Gauteng rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will be desperate for an improvement on the past 12 months when they both failed to win silverware.
The likes of BidVest Wits and SuperSport United cannot be counted out and will also be keen to make an early impression with positive results on matchday one.
With Sundowns not in action this week – they have a CAF Champions League commitment – all eyes will be on the pretenders for the title.
The highlight of the fixtures takes place on Tuesday when the Students entertain Amakhosi at BidVest Stadium.
Other fixtures on Tuesday will see the new Cape Town City franchise play Polokwane City at Cape Town Stadium, while reigning National First Division champions Baroka FC take their top-flight bow at home to Ajax Cape Town – a match to be played at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Apart from the anticipated cracker between Orlando Pirates’ fixture with Lamontville Golden Arrows on Wednesday, there is also Platinum Stars, last season’s surprise third-placed finishers, up against SuperSport at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
From the outset, it looks like this is going to be a very interesting campaign, and there are sure to be some thrills and spills! With some new blood coming into the league and some unknown beings, all will break loose!
So, let us all sit back and relax... I know that can be difficult for a football fanatic to do, but let us just enjoy the beautiful game as it unfolds before our eyes.
