‘Les Corbeaux’ reached their successive final 1-0 on aggregate thanks to Ben Malango’s 14th minute winner in the first leg three weeks ago in Lubumbashi.
With news from Casablanca of rivals Wydad Athletic Club’s qualification to the final of the Total CAF Champions League filtering into the stadium few minutes into the game; FUS Rabat, winners in 2010, failed in their quest to complete a Moroccan double in the final of the two continental club championships.
Mazembe had goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo to thank for his decisive saves which kept them in the game as near misses by the FUS Rabat forward line complicated their woes.
Gbohouo stood between the hosts and goal in both halves as the holders’ strategy of catching their opponents on the break yielded dividends.
‘Les Corbeaux’ also had some decent chances to score but FUS goalie Aymane Majid denied Malango and substitute Meschak Elia in the dying embers of the game.
Mazembe will face the winner of Sunday’s other semi-final between Tunisia’s Club Africain and Supersport United of South Africa in the two-legged final which has 1,250,000 US Dollars at stake for the eventual winner.
