GABORONE (FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017) - Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto stunned the defending African champions InterClube 57-49 to book a place at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women 2017 scheduled to be held in Angola from November 10-19.
InterClube, however, recovered in the third quarter scoring 16 points and limited Primeiro de Agosto to 10 but the later maintained the lead.
A tense last quarter saw both sides tussling to register victory but it was Primeiro de Agosto that left the court smiling with a win that will earn them a place to play at the continental stage.
In conversation with FIBA.basketball, Primeiro de Agosto center Nicole Vanessa Gidden said, “this was a very important win for us. I’m very proud of my teammates and coaching staff for coming together but also our defense picked up today.”
“After the loss to Ferroviario de Maputo, we needed to play under pressure to win today. Our backs were against the team and we came through.”
Leia Dongue scored a team high 16 points while Rosa Gala and Elisabeth Mateus Gomes added 15 and 10 points respectively for Primeiro de Agosto.
Veteran Filipe Ngiendula netted a game high 19 points and picked seven rebounds but her efforts were not enough to help her side win.
Police Academy of Botswana registered their second win at the tournament following a 48-41 victory over Lakers from Zimbabwe.
Endie Toffee Banyaditse had a player-of-the-match performance with 12 rebounds and 11 points to help Police win.
Yolanda Matayataya led the statistics board for the Lakers with 12 points and six rebounds.
Zimbabwe’s Southern Mavericks picked their third win after defeating Botswana Defense Force 80-37 with the latter going winless at the regional tournament.
The unbeaten Ferroviario de Maputo and Primeiro de Agosto have joined GS Petroliers (Algeria), Equity and Kenya Ports Authority both from Kenya, First Bank (Nigeria) as well as ASB Victoria and SB Darling Motema both from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
