In Portland’s season-opening 5-1 victory over Minnesota United FC, Valeri totaled two goals and an assist, helping to match the team’s highest single-game scoring total in MLS and largest margin of victory at Providence Park in the club’s MLS era. Valeri, who leads the league in combined goals and assists with three after the first week of play, finished the 2016 season tied for eighth in MLS with 21 combined goals and assists (14 goals, 7 assists).
Valeri completed his day by blasting home a penalty kick to the left corner of the net, extending Portland’s lead to 3-1 in the 82nd minute (Watch Goal). The brace was Valeri’s fifth of his Timbers career.
The Portland Timbers return to action this Sunday on the road against the LA Galaxy in the team’s first away game of the season (7 p.m. ET., FS1/FOX Deportes).
