The appointment of Phiri comes barely three weeks before the Flames travel to Antananarivo to face Madagascar in the qualifiers for the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) Kenya 2018.
Phiri, 48, whose son Gerald Phiri Junior, plays for South African side Platinum Stars was unveiled at a ceremony on Wednesday, 29 March 2017 in Blantyre.
The appointment of Phiri, who failed to register a win with the Malawi U-20 team at the 2016 COSAFA Youth Championship in South Africa, marks a u-turn for the association which tinkered on appointing an expatriate coach.
“It is a challenge which I am ready to take on. Let us forget the past and focus on the challenge at hand,” said Phiri.
The Flames will play as guest of Madagascar on 22 April 2017 before hosting the return in Lilongwe seven days later.
