
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, January 29, 2015 - Inquiries about tickets for the volleyball tournament at the Rio Olympics in 2016 indicate just how popular the sport will be at next year's showpiece. Rio 2016 Executive Director of Communications Mario Andrada said 27% of the ticketing website's users had registered an interest in volleyball, putting the sport ahead of other popular events including football, swimming and athletics.
To date, the Rio Olympics ticketing site has attracted interest from 174,000 sports fans - the registration process allows for fans to indicate which sports they are most interested in buying tickets for. The sports claiming the most attention were volleyball (27%), football (21.9%), swimming (21%) and athletics (20.6%).
The beach volleyball tournament at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is also set to mark an important new milestone in the history of the sport, after the highly successful event at the London Olympics. A temporary beach volleyball stadium will be located at Copacabana beach with seating for 12,000 spectators. The venue, which will be located on one of Brazil’s most famous landmarks, will play a central role in the image of the 2016 Olympic Games, which will take place from August 5-21 next year.
