Red Bulls set MLS single-season points record with 71,
move ahead of Atlanta for top seed heading into Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs
NEW YORK (Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018) – The New York Red Bulls leapt past Atlanta United on MLS Decision Day presented by AT&T to capture their third Supporters’ Shield following a 1-0 victory against Orlando City SC on Sunday at Red Bull Arena. Led by Homegrown Player Derrick Etienne Jr.’s strong cutback effort to put NYRB up 1-0 early in the second half (SEE GOAL ), the Red Bulls became only the second club in MLS history to come from behind on the season’s final game to win the Shield (the other was the 2001 Miami Fusion over the Chicago Fire). The Red Bulls also won the Supporters’ Shield in 2013 and 2015.
The Red Bulls cap the regular season with a 22-7-5 record (71 points), which breaks the MLS points record set by Toronto FC in 2017 (20-5-9, 69 points) and matched by Atlanta in 2018 (21-7-6, 69 points). As the Supporters’ Shield winner, NYRB has the top seed throughout the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs and would host MLS Cup if the club advances to that stage.
