Red Bulls claim second Supporters’ Shield in three years with win over Chicago Fire

Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco wins Audi Golden Boot with 22 regular season goals

NEW YORK, NY (Sunday, October 25, 2015) – In one of the most thrilling ends to the MLS regular season on #DecisionDay, the New York Red Bulls captured the 2015 Supporters’ Shield with a 2-1 over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. The Red Bulls edged past FC Dallas on goal differential, as both clubs finished the regular season tied on points (60) and total wins (18). The Supporters’ Shield, introduced by organized fan groups, is awarded annually to the supporters of the team with the best regular season record in MLS.

With the best record in 2015 (18-10-6, 60 points), the Red Bulls claim home-field advantage through the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs and earn a berth into the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League. This marks the Red Bulls’ second Supporters’ Shield win in three years, previously taking home the trophy in 2013.

The Supporters’ Shield has been won by a total of 10 different MLS clubs in the league’s 20-season history, with both the LA Galaxy and D.C. United hoisting the trophy a record four times. Of the previous 19 winners, six have gone on to win MLS Cup, one has lost in the final and six were eliminated in the Conference Championship and Conference Semifinals, respectively.

In addition to the Supporters’ Shield result, Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco claimed the Audi Golden Boot for a league-best 22 goals scored during his historic debut season. The MVP candidate was awarded the trophy via tiebreaker as his league-leading 16 assists beat out Columbus Crew SC forward Kei Kamara, who also finished the regular season with 22 tallies. The Italian international, purchased from Italian powerhouse Juventus in January, set a new MLS single-season combined goals and assists record (38) and led TFC to its first ever playoff berth. His 22-goal campaign is tied with former Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Camillo Sanvezzo for the third-highest mark among all Audi Golden Boot winners (2005-present).

* up to the 2004 season, the Scoring Champion was determined by total points, with a goal counting two points and assists counting as one. Beginning in 2005, the title was renamed the Golden Boot, and awarded to the leading goalscorer in the season. In case of a tie, the winner will be decided by the player with the most assists; if still tied, the winner will be the player with fewer minutes played.
