The Light Flyweights (49kg) got the evening underway in front of a packed crowd, with Italia Thunder’s Federico Serra recording his first WSB win at the third time of asking against the hosts’ debutant Said Bounkoult. It was a clinical display from Serra, leaving little opportunity for his opponent to make any inroads into his solid defensive set up and eventually easing to a unanimous points win.
The evening’s third bout saw Light Welterweights (64kg) Youness Baati and Italia Thunder’s Spanish draft pick Sebastian Mendizabal face-off in a terrific contest, and it was Baati in his second taste of five-round action who assumed the early initiative against the debutant. Mendizabel began to land more frequently behind his solid left jabs in the third, but Baati managed to hold off the Italian’s spirited challenge and secure a memorable win.
Two tough Middleweights contested the fourth bout of the match, with Ukrainian Dmytro Mytrofanov knowing that a win against Raffaele Munno would seal a superb victory for his adopted team. The Atlas Lions’ draft pick went straight to work on his opponent leaving Munno no time to establish a rhythm, and the Italian corner was forced to call an end to the bout at the end of the second round and the Atlas Lions were guaranteed all three points.
Italia Thunder’s Kristiyan Dimitrov went into his Heavyweight (91kg) bout against Abdeljalil Abouhamda knowing a win would mean a precious bonus point for the visitors, but his opponent’s longer reach caused problems time and again down the middle as Abouhamda began well. It was to be Dimitrov who found the big finish to the bout with some sharp left jabs, and at the end of five incredibly close and gruelling rounds it was the Bulgarian who edged the split decision to earn Italia Thunder a point as Morocco Atlas Lions won out 3-2.
