In 2015 and in celebration of Major League Soccer’s 20th season, MLS WORKS, adidas, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, and Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) partnered to build 20 mini-pitches in underserved communities in coordination with each of the 20 MLS clubs. Over the past year and a half, these partners, in collaboration with each MLS club in its local market, have displayed their shared commitment in bringing soccer and a safe place to play to children in these communities. Additionally, individuals who have shown that same exceptional commitment in supporting youth in their community were awarded with a full scholarship from SNHU. Just this month in Montreal, these partners gathered to open the 20th and final mini-pitch of the initiative.
The impact of the initiative has been notable across North America. Throughout the program, more than $1 million in resources were dedicated, which have helped create more than 25,000 hours of structured play through U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer For Success program, and more than 13,000 youth being provided with free afterschool programming. Additionally, SNHU has awarded 18 full scholarships through the program. Click here for an infographic that illustrates the full impact of the 20 for 20 Mini-Pitch Initiative.
