Sebastien Migne picked his first win as Kenya’s coach after the side beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in a friendly match played in Machakos on Monday evening. Piston Mutamba scored the lone goal in the 73rd minute as Stars recovered from Friday’s 1-0 loss to Swaziland.

Migne was elated with the result at the full time whistle but notes that there is more work to be done.

“I have worked with local players only but at least there is improvement though there is a lot to do. We cannot celebrate this win but take the positives. I am happy with how we played. Big improvement from the game against Swaziland and I am very happy we kept a clean sheet because it was a target,” the French coach said after the match.

It was a tougher game compared to Friday’s and Migne’s charges stepped up. He made four changes to the team as he gave an opportunity to more players to impress with Mutamba making his senior team debut.

The visitors had the first stab at goal in the 10th minute but keeper Patrick Matasi made a superb block to deny Valeriano Nchama who headed a Nicolas Kata Senga corner. Kenya’s first chance at goal was also via set piece when Frederico Ondo was forced to clear off the line in the 16th minute from Jockins Atudo’s header off a Francis Kahata corner.

Atudo once again threatened from set play when he headed into the edge of the box a deep Duncan Otieno corner, but there was no one to finish off.

In the second half, Migne made the game changing substitution, midfielder Kenneth Muguna making way for enterprising winger Ovela Ochieng. The 19-year old brought some life into the game with good pace and became a constant threat to the Equatorial Guinea backline.

In the 73rd minute, his pace on the right was too much for the visitors’ defenders and he found some space to lay in a low cross into the box which was slammed into the net by Mutamba. Minutes after providing an assist he almost had a goal for himself on two occasions both from free kicks.

The first went inches over the bar while the second was well handled by the keeper.
Kenya almost blew away the lead in added time when a lapse of concentration saw De Garcia out leap his markers at the back post to connect to a freekick from Bicoro Akieme, but it came off the bar and Stars cleared in earnest.
