Mama Sarah Obama 2 weeks Visit to Canada

Dr. Mama Sarah Obama has been at the forefront of championing the plight of the orphans, the girl child and widows in Africa and has won various international awards including UN Women Education Award on November 2014 at New York, USA. She also got Doctor of Letters Degree Award for her work in aid of poor communities in Kenya.

She is visiting Canada under the invitation of GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon and Harun Otwoma Foundation. 


Her Itinerary will be as follows:

• 2nd May 2015 – Arrival of Mama Sarah Obama Delegation in Canada

• 3rd May 2015 – Gracing the GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon

• 6th May 2015 - Dinner Hosted by Friends of Mama Sarah Obama at University of Toronto

• 7th May 2015 – Knights Table of Peel Region event in honour of Mama Sarah Obama

• 8th May 2015 - Dinner Hosted by Ontario Business Community

• 12th May 2015 - Luncheon Hosted by Rotary Club of Mississauga Airport

Some of the programs that Mama Sarah Obama has been implementing through her NGO Safeguard Orphans and Widows Organization (SOWO) include:

1 Education & Literacy: Mama Sarah Obama has been identifying orphans and vulnerable children who are unable to get education due to lack of school fees. She is currently supporting 1,100 children in Primary with learning materials and uniforms. It is also supporting through schools fees 22 students in Secondary, 1 student in Tertiary College and 5 students in Universities

2 Youth & Women Empowerment: Mama Sarah Obama has been working in collaboration with various Youth and Women CBOs and Self-help groups in Kenya. The goal has been to help uplift their members’ social-economic status in the community through Table Banking which is now being upgraded to SOWO SACCO with the objective of making them financially independent.

3 Food Security & Environment Sustainability: Mama Sarah Obama has been conducting capacity building for farmers groups on Agri-business value chain projects. On environment she working in collaboration with international and local partners is training CBOs and self-help groups on environmental conservation, solar lighting and environmental friendly cooking stoves for homes and institutions.

4 Culture & Sports: Mama Sarah Obama conducted her inaugural Mama Sarah Obama SOWO Kogelo15km Road race in November 2013 which was graced by the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya H.E. Margaret Kenyatta. The second edition was held last year in partnership with Siaya County Government where the persons with disability also participated. The last two events were held at Nyang’oma - Kogelo. The 2015 edition has been upgraded by Athletics Kenya to a 21km Half Marathon dubbed Mama Sarah Obama SOWO Half Marathon. It shall be held on 24th October 2015 at Siaya County Stadium.

5 Shelter, Water, Sanitation & Hygiene: Mama Sarah Obama has built a number of houses for elderly widows in Siaya. In collaboration with other stakeholders her NGO has been conducting capacity building to schools, CBOs and women groups on Sanitation and Hygiene.

6 Healthcare: Mama Sarah Obama has been working on various health program areas including HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Malaria Prevention, Family Planning, Maternal Care, Anti-Jigger Campaign (In collaboration with Ahadi Kenya Trust), Polio and Tuberculosis. She recently mobilized about 800 patients for free eye clinic.

7 International Volunteers & Work Camps: Mama Sarah Obama has recently launched the program in collaboration with Siaya County Ministry of Tourism where tourists, interns and volunteers especially from the developed countries can participate in projects that impact on the poorest communities in Kenya. The work camps are short term projects that span from 2-6 weeks while medium-term take upto a maximum of 6 months. The long term projects take upto two years and normally are those that involve technical skills assistance and teaching in various schools that have shortage of teachers. The volunteer projects are done in collaboration with host institutions and the community where the activities take place.
