Blantyre, Malawi, October 18: The Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has confirmed that coach for Malawi national netball team, Sam Kanyenda has dumped the team and that the game’s local governing body will be identifying his replacement to be known by the end of this week.
“I can confirm that Mr Kanyenda has left the squad but the time he left the team was being drilled by other remaining members of the technical team. But I cannot say much on that issue.
“But the nation will be informed who will lead the squad as a coach and the entire team that will be travelling to Australia,” she said.
The Malawi Queens will be travelling to Melbourne in Australia for Fast 5 Netball World Series tournament without the team linchpin and maestro, Kumwenda who has been dropped on disciplinary grounds for reporting late to the team training camp.
Kanyenda reportedly protested the exclusion of Kumwenda from the squad describing it as suicidal and equalling it to Argentina national soccer team leaving out star striker Lionel Messi and Portugal national soccer team dumping its talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is not only Kanyenda who has voiced concern on the exclusion of the star shooter who reportedly had earlier on informed the game governing body that she will be reporting late for the team training camp because she had outstanding private matters to sort out.
Sports analyst, Charles Nyirenda described the stance taken by the netball governing body against Kumwenda as childish and asked it to reverse the decision forthwith as it would have a negative bearing on the team performance in Australia.
“You cannot leave out your star shooter who has been the team’s linchpin from such important tournament. This is a childish decision and I would like to appeal to the Sports Minister to intervene into the matter,” said Nyirenda.
Nam secretary general declined to comment on its stance it has taken against netball genius saying that would be best answered by coach Kanyenda.
“I cannot respond to that questions or say much on the issue that issue, its Mr Kanyenda himself who can be in better position to respond to that issue. What I can say is that in his absence there were other coaches who were drilling the team,” she said.
