In the day's first clash, between Algeria and Madagascar, in which both teams tried to avoid the last place in Group A, the islanders stepped on the floor so determined that they closed the first quarter with a 16-8 lead.

The trio of Jaofera Christiane, Tohi'Iaina Sambatrarimiora and Herisoa Ratovoarimanga combined for 34 points for Madagascar.
