SHENZHEN (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - The New Zealand Select team that is full of players hoping to make the FIBA Asia Cup 2017 Tall Blacks roster put an exclamation mark on their tour of China with a victory over Cameroon.
Beaten by the African side in the first meeting, 83-59, in Changshu, the sides met again in Shenzhen and the Kiwis prevailed, 73-69.
Luke Aston poured in 12 points, Ethan Rusbatch 10 and Finn Delany 8 for the winners.
"We shot the ball very well, especially Ethan and Luke," said assistant coach Mike Fitchett. "Most importantly, we dealt with their length and athleticism and only had 16 turnovers."
In the first meeting against Cameroon, the New Zealander Select had 29 turnovers.
"We controlled the pace of the game well and didn't allow them to run," Fitchett said. "Holding them to 30 points in the first half was great."
New Zealand coach Paul Henare led the players on the tour and will be encouraged by the improvement of the squad, and the five wins from six games.
He will have a lot of options when choosing his squad for the FIBA Asia Cup. New Zealand will go up against Kazakhstan, Lebanon and Korea in Group C of the competition, which is to be staged in Beirut August 8-20.
