The Thunder’s Flyweight (52kg) Gianmario Serra was given a tough WSB debut in the opening bout against Morocco’s London 2012 Olympian Abdelali Daraa. Serra started the brighter of the two and delivered some fierce hooks, but Daraa’s trademark attacking style eventually took over, and a unanimous points win gave the visitors’ the early advantage.
Light Heavyweight (81kg) Valentino Manfredonia had a superb, unbeaten Season V for the Italians, but even he could find no answer to the power and speed of Egyptian WSB debutant Abdelrahman Salah Orabi, who levelled the match at 2-2 with a gutsy unanimous points win. That left the Super Heavyweights (+91kg) to decide the outcome, and it was the Italians’ Guido Vianello who faced Morocco’s double-Olympian Mohammed Arjaoui in the fifth bout. Vianello was quicker than his opponent early on but failed to find his target as Arjaoui looked dangerous on the counter-attack. By the fourth round, the experienced Italian had seized control, knocking his opponent down twice to help seal a unanimous points win and a hard-fought victory for his team.
