The Iranian national team, Team Melli will engage Sierra Leone in an international friendly match scheduled for March 17 2018 at the Tehran Azadi Stadium in Iran.
According to the head of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) Mehdi Taj, Team Melli will play a match against Sierra Leone after the withdrawal of Libya.
Taj said: “Sierra Leone replaced Libya who withdrew from the friendly after their foreign-based players were not allowed to join their national team. Iran will face Tunisia on March 23rd in Tunisia and then meet Algeria in our training camp in Austria. Team Melli has also been scheduled to play Syria and Uzbekistan on May 11th and 18th respectively in Tehran.”
Iran is the highest FIFA ranked Asian football team sitting at 33rd in the world classification while Sierra Leone sits in 97th place.
The international friendly against Sierra Leone is one of several matches’ coach Carlos Queiroz’s men will play as they prepare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Iran is paired in Group B alongside Spain, Morocco and Portugal for the 2018 World Cup and they will start their campaign against Morocco at Saint Petersburg on June 15th before taking on Spain in Kazan on 20th June and later meet Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in Saransk in their final group match.
