I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles is an American song which debuted in a Broadway musical in 1918. The following decade it was adopted by West Ham United supporters and is, now, one of the most recognisable anthems in English football alongside Blaydon Races (Newcastle United), Blue Moon (Manchester City) and You’ll Never Walk Alone (Liverpool).
It was also sung during the last match at Highbury Stadium – and not by West Ham fans. On that occasion, on the final day of 2005/06, Tottenham Hotspur needed to better Arsenal’s result to snatch the fourth UEFA Champions League place at their arch-rivals’ expense. A Thierry Henry goal had Arsene Wenger’s side en route to a 4-2 win over Wigan Athletic and, when news trickled through to Highbury that Yossi Benayoun had scored a late winner for the Hammers against Spurs, the Gunners followers belted out a verse of I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles.

On Sunday the tune was heard at Arsenal’s new stadium – and this time it was from the West Ham fans. Unanswered goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate ensured Slaven Bilic's reign began with a huge upset and gave the claret and blue section of London reason for song.
It was West Ham’s first win over Arsenal in eight years and 16 games.
